Bricks and buildings

Read me

This is a Hydraform brick, made by the Beehive project in Chilomoni, Blantyre, Malawi - a business started with the help of the Krizevac Project.

Click here if you are unfamiliar with this project.

You can buy bricks for the Chilomoni community at just £1.00 each. Of this 20 pence pays for the cost of producing the brick and 80 pence goes towards the local labour and other materials for constructing the building you choose. Nothing stays in the UK (other than any bank/credit card/PayPal charges deducted from your payment)

Beehive bricks are made from an earth and cement mixture (5-8% cement). They are compressed, but not fired, so no trees are cut down to produce them. There is careful quality control to ensure their strength and durability. Using these bricks protects the environment.

You can watch the manufacturing process in Chilomoni on the clip below.

The bricks are inter-locking and stack together. The overall amount of cement needed when using these bricks is less than in a conventional building.

So choose your building and how many bricks you wish to contribute to it! Every brick helps us towards the total.

The Beehive Children's Centre aims to transform the next generation.

The Children's Centre will be a one-stop shop for children from 0 to 5 years old (the most dangerous years in Malawi). It will provide supervised nurseries and play areas for children. Parents will have access to information and education on all aspects of child care, and family planning in the broadest sense. The Centre will provide information and advice on available services and routes for self-improvement and employment.

Places will be reserved for HIV orphans. The Centre will be staffed from the local community. Alongside employees there will be opportunities for voluntary work providing experience to improve employment prospects.

The Centre will take an estimated 150,000 bricks to build.

Purchase as few or as many as you can. For each pound, 20 pence goes to pay the cost of making the Hydraform brick and 80 pence pays towards the labour and other costs of construction in Malawi (the only deductions in the UK will be any charges for processing your payment).

The Beehive Technical School aims to meet the demand for Beehive courses for computer users, computer engineers and sewing machine operators. These are currently housed in a single classrooms for each and courses are oversubscribed. Lessons and qualifications not only help to create employment opportunities for those in Chilomoni, people from all over Malawi are enrolling on the courses, creating employment for trainers and bringing income to the area.

The Technical School will house 10 additional classrooms to meet this demand.

It will also provide 10 spaces for Beehive technical businesses and for entrepreneurs emerging from the school to rent. Beehive has already set up a successful computer rental business and an internet café. Chilomoni may be a poor region, but it is just 10 minutes from the heart of Blantyre's business centre. When people are trained and provided with support they could provide services such as: conference equipment, data recovery, website design, DVD production, music recording and much more.

All that is required make this reality is imagination and support from people like you.

The Technical Schol and Business Centre will take an estimated 150,000 bricks to build.
